Some First Impressions and
Musings on Returning to the Ecuadorian Cloud Forest
At precisely six a.m. I´m
awakened by a birdcall that outdoes even the local roosters for
rudely breaking the early dawn silence. A pair of Horneros
(Pacific Ovenbirds) are building their mud nest high in a closeby
Pachaco tree. Construction is apparently still in progress,
as I see the small, orange, thrush-like birds flying back and
forth between ground and nest, beaks loaded with rich brown mud.
Through the course of the day, many more tropical birds appear
around the house. A band of Chestnut-Mandibled Toucans call raucously
from the guava tree, which is in full fruit. Overhead, a flock
of parrots call loudly and constantly to each other as they pass. ... more
